Since stuff like ultimate XMen isn’t directly related to the original, itdoesn’tt matter what you read first.
I’m recommend the newer comics, because they look 100x better than the originals(obviously).
Ultimate and Astonishing Xmen are both very good.
A GREAT starting point would be to get a copy of Alex Ross’s “Marvels” which is a beautifully rendered history of the Marvel Universe. It was originally published as a 4 issue series, but has been collected in “graphic novel” format and you can pick up a copy for around $20 or so. Worth every penny.
The Ultimates line of comics is a good starting point too, since they basically reboot the titles from the beginning.
There are so many titles, that unless you have unlimited funds and unlimited reading time, you’ll have to narrow down your choices to a few titles or characters.
ultimates aren’t a good idea because that is a different universe
or you could just start at the illuminati 1-5 series so you can read the secret invasion series that’s going on right now.

Ultimate Spider-Man is usually what I use to encourage people to get into comics. It is one of my all time favorites and a great place to start.
